Kitchen Saga [Part 1: it all started with the dishwasher]

When we bought this house last spring, we knew the kitchen was in some serious need of being brought into this century. But a kitchen overhaul/update just sounds so…daunting. And chaotic. And time consuming. And annoying. Nathan wanted to get it done before the babies arrive in August, but I just didn’t see how or even where to start. I guess we just needed that “push” to get the ball rolling. The dishwasher conked out. Nathan said he refused to replace it without replacing the floor. Makes sense. But I pointed out that if we were going to re-floor, we might as well paint the cabinets before the new floor is installed. He agreed…and the kitchen saga began. He removed the old dishwaser and the tile floor. And the two layers of laminate floor that were under the tile floor.

Kitchen Saga [Part 1]|eventuallycomplete.comOur appliances, dishes, and kitchen gadgets went on an adventure that weekend. But really, our dining room and foyer just looked like a poorly organized garage sale. I guess I didn’t think about emptying out all cabinets and drawers when I mentioned painting the cabinets. We ate on paper plates and had many meals out for a couple weekends.

Now that the floor was removed, he removed all the cabinet doors, drawers, and prepped everything for paint by sanding and taping.

Kitchen Saga [Part 1]|eventuallycomplete.comSince we were replacing the counter tops and adding a backsplash on the walls under the cabinets, he didn’t worry too much about covering those areas from the overspray. We just have to live with painted counter tops for awhile. No big.

No turning back now!

The paint covered pretty well. Some areas did need a couple coats or touch up with a brush. But overall, the white paint was a HUGE improvement!

After everything dried, I got to work on putting everything back in the cabinets and Nathan installed the new dishwasher!

And….this is where I stop.

Next post the saga continues! There will be doors on cabinets, new hardware…and new floors! 😀

Press on!
