It’s been a little over a quarter of a year since I began my No-Buying-Clothes-for-One-Year challenge…er…fast…whatever you want to call it. (You can read more about the why and such here.) And I have to say, it’s been an up and down experience to say the least! I also decided kind of at the last minute to participate in Dressember again…that def pushed my no-buying-clothes-self-control to the limits! But, I’m happy to say I made it through the month of December without buying any dresses!
(If you aren’t familiar with Dressember, you can read all about it on their website, I blogged about it two years ago here, and you can still make a donation through the end of January! They are soooo close to meeting their goal of raising 1.5 million!)
Anywho…not buying clothes and only wearing dresses in December was going pretty ok until my husband mentioned his company was having a Christmas party. At a restaurant in Union Station that I’ve wanted to go to since we moved here. And it’s a nice restaurant. Typically I’d be out shopping for a new dress to wear to an event such as this. Buuuuut…I said I wouldn’t buy any new clothes and I’m a girl of my word! Also, it totally bothers me that the dress I bought for his company Christmas party last year has been worn one time. To that one event. I probably dropped about $100 on that dress at Nordstrom’s. I love the dress but no one wants to wear the same dress to the same event twice in a row. I’m sure I’m the only one out there with any of these problems 😉
Enter Rent the Runway.com. I’d seen it advertised on Pinterest and on various blogs. I’d browsed the site a few times and read wonderful reviews. Now was the time to try it out! Friends, I’m so very glad I did! I hope you know me well enough by now to know I only recommend sites/services on my blog if I’ve personally tried them and been satisfied with the service/outcome. Rent the Runway fits my rule perfectly. They make the whole process so easy and straightforward. You select which day your event takes place, choose when you want your dress to arrive (they suggest 1-2 days prior to the scheduled date of the event), and they give you 1-2 days after your event to get it shipped back…so basically you select a 3-4 day block of dates 🙂 Then, you look for your dress! You can be specific about price range, colors, style, length, sleeves…there are so many options! You can also rent accessories: necklaces, bracelets, clutches. I didn’t do that this time, but there are so many options of jewels that would be so fun to wear! I received 20% off my first order so after the discount and shipping, I believe I spent almost $70. Less than I spent last year, AND I won’t have a dress hanging in my closet I’ll never wear again. (Confession: I did buy the black heels and tights…black heels are a staple in a closet and that’s all I bought!) PLUS…and this is what I love the most…I rented a dress that I would NEVER have purchased.
See what I mean? It’s such a fun dress! I loved wearing it…but I never would have that hanging in my closet! It’s impractical for sure. But when you use Rent the Runway, you can get that fancy, fun, impractical dress! Also, it was a Badgley Mischka dress…worth waaaay more than any dress I’ll ever own!
Reading the reviews on dresses was extremely helpful too. Many women in my size range commented that this dress was larger than they expected. And I agree. I was planning on wearing the black tights anyways, but even if I hadn’t, I don’t think I would have felt overexposed length wise. So when you do rent a dress, make sure to read the reviews from women in your size range!
Forgot to mention…when you select your dress, you choose your typical size you think you’ll wear, as well as a back-up size…for free. So great!
After the event and it’s time to pack up the dress and send it back, they make that part easy as well.
The return instructions are included as well as the return shipping label. Follow the instructions, take it to a UPS store. Done. Now to wait until my next formal/semi-formal event 🙂
Could I have gone to the party in a regular dress that I already owned? Sure. And no one would have cared. But how often do I take the time to get dressed up in something fun, fancy, and out-of-the-ordinary? I truly believe it was good for my heart to do this. It made this stay-at-home-mom feel a little bit elegant for one evening…and I don’t think that’s something to take lightly. Plus, I’m pretty sure my husband was ok with me getting dressed up too 😉 Maybe you need to rent something special for a Valentines date? Or for a night at the symphony? I encourage you to be a little bold, possibly take a risk…treat yourself and rent something that makes you feel not-so-ordinary 🙂 Needless to say, I’m thrilled with my Rent the Runway experience! I can’t wait to use it again! I sincerely hope you will check it out too!
If you’re ever in the KC area, make sure you visit Union Station! It’s beautiful, especially during Christmas! They don’t build places like that anymore! And the restaurant, Pierponts was superb. And I can’t forget to mention my date…he’s a handsome one! 🙂
Have you ever used Rent the Runway? If so, I’d love to see what you rented!
I’m still not buying clothes until September 1st, 2017 and I’m back to wearing pants 😉 However…I have purchased some workout clothes. But I did use Christmas money to do it! Also…I don’t need a lot of workout clothes and don’t foresee having to buy anymore. 2017 is our year to get healthy! Hope to blog more about that soon!
